April 2023 Distance Challenge Results

We have just entered the long course season. Long course, for those who are new to the sport, takes place in pools whose course is over double the length of a short course pool (by about 11%). Swimmers are allowed to travel underwater 15 meters off each wall (regardless of which course it is), which allows those who are very good at streamlining and underwater dolphin kick, to have to swim very little. Generally, all they really have to be good at is the underwater stuff to win races, as the dolphin kick can be faster than even fast freestyle swimmers.

Long course, however, changes the whole game plan. Not only are there half the number of walls / turn opportunities, swimmers actually have to be able to swim in order to win races. The difference between short course and long course – especially for our Thunder swimmers -- comes down to having great technique and being in excellent shape. Swimmers needed to kick-start their Long Course season by getting in shape quickly – especially as our current season is relatively short.

Throughout the month of April, our Thunder swimmers participated in the annual distance challenge. Each practice we held, we kept track of every yard our swimmers completed, totaled them up each week, awarded the weekly winners and then totaled the entire month for each swimmer.

Swimmers who achieved over 100,000 yards by the end of April were presented with a certificate as members of the 100 K Club.

Month Winners from each group were:

Thunder 1      Girls: Regan Olson              Boys: Asher Lin
